The images
in our dances seep out of our emotional memory banks. With words and
movement we weave through space, over and around each other, seeking
physical metaphors that speak of emotional complexity. Our highly
personal
work explores both the instability and resilience of moving bodies,
creating and resolving emotional tension.
Our virtuosic
physical vocabulary of Kamikaze lifts, falls, floor work and exacting
gestures
is layered with spoken language from sources
as diverse
as the walls of the Lower East Side and the 14th Century writer Boccaccio.
We use this dramatic physicality to bring to light emotional worlds
smoldering just below the surface of daily existence. The resulting
work tells stories
in shouts and whispers, articulating the body’s secrets.
We
are actively committed to collaboration with artists from other
mediums. Visual artists add scenic elements and dynamic, dramatic
physical frames
of reference. Composers and live musicians create sonic environments
that both drive and caress us. The collisions and intersections
of these three
mediums result in kinetic environments that define the world of
each dance.
We believe the body moving through space is inherently expressive
and that expression is a central part of the human experience.
In line with these
beliefs we have created ongoing workshops to share that experience
with people of all ages and dance abilities. We educate and advocate
for dance
and performing arts in our community, taking our workshops and
dances into parking lots, gyms, playing fields and even the Hudson
River.
There is
a connection between the world of our work, our audiences and our
local communities. We believe the intersection of these worlds
results in accessible,
personal work. We strive to build dances, workshops, and performances
that actively engage participants while continually challenging
their emotional
and kinesthetic comfort level.
